New Season

‘Dear Red Tagger,

Well the first month of the season is almost done. Around the traps there have been a number of reports of good fish being taken in various waters, some more so than others. The weather has been unusual at times with very cold, blustery and snowy conditions to warm sunny mild days. All of which is making for an interesting start to the season.

August for Red Tag is generally a very slow month, with only hardy souls venturing out in the cool, crisp air but on the 9th I had two Ladies from Interstate venture to Hobart and off we went to Currawong Lakes for the day. As the weather was fresh to say the least and both were beginners, although no fish were taken, both ladies thoroughly enjoyed their experience, fell in love with the countryside and location and made a pledge that they will return and bring others with them.

With recent good rains it was wonderful to see the Currawong Lakes high water levels and brimming with life in the surrounds. Five eagles flying overhead seemed like the parents and young ones loving the thermals, then to see a number of Wombats, both parents and their babies wandering around was very special. The reports I’ve had from Currawong are that the fish at the moment are mainly deeper down so sinking lines or weighted flies have been doing the trick.

Just a reminder that I will be away overseas from 26/8 until 9/9. During this time I will be competing at the Club Crew Dragon Boat Championships in Taiwan. I will still be checking my emails for any guiding requests that may come in, speaking of which, requests are now flowing on for jobs in the peak months so if you’re thinking of booking a day or several, check things out on my calendar please for open periods.

And finally, keep in mind the ‘Learn to Fly Fish’ workshops running monthly from October, great for the beginner or novice returning to the sport.
